FLOR500, Garden 404 Lewis Colson, Community Activist (1844–1922) Lewis Colson, who came to Sarasota with the original surveying team in 1884, became a leader in the African American community. A lay preacher, he and his wife Irene donated land for the Bethlehem Baptist Church and he served as its minister and pastor from 1899 to 1915. The Colson Hotel and Colson Street are named in his honor.

Lewis Colson, Community Activist

Lewis Colson, who came to Sarasota with the original surveying team in 1884, became a leader in the African American community.
