FLOR500, Garden 433 Calvin N. Payne, Sarasota Benefactor (1844–1926) Calvin and Martha Payne, winter residents from 1917 to 1926, were said to have given Sarasota the finest gift it ever received. In 1925 they donated sixty acres of centrally located land, valued at $250,000, to be used for a public park. Beginning with the New York Giants in 1924, Payne Park was used for Major League spring training until 1988. Another piece of property they donated on Sarasota Bay is known today as Centennial Park.
