FLOR500, Garden 440 Kenneth Thompson, City Manager (1910–2001) An engineer by training, Kenneth Thompson arrived in Sarasota in 1950 and remained city manager for 38 years, the longest tenure of any city manager in history. He guided Sarasota through its post-World War II boom and beyond. He was at the helm of city government through its most profound changes. When he died he was called the “Architect of modern Sarasota.”
