Dana Albert Dorsey,
Businessman and Philanthropist
African American D. A. Dorsey moved to the Miami area about 1896, where
he built rental housing for blacks. He built Miami’s first hotel for blacks,
the Dorsey Hotel, and partly owned the Negro Savings Bank. He became one of
Florida’s first millionaires, and spent part of his wealth for the greater
good. For example, he donated land for black schools and a library.
