Millie Gildersleeve, Midwife and Farmer

Millie Gildersleeve was one of the first African Americans to permanently live in Palm Beach County when she arrived from Georgia as a freed slave around 1885. She had a long career as a midwife, attending both settlers and Seminole Indians. She and her husband, Jake, had a strawberry farm on the shore of Lake Worth.
