James Jerome "Cracker” Johnson, Entrepreneur


Johnson made his fortune from gambling and bootlegging and used the money to buy real estate and provided mortgages to African Americans who could not get them from white-owned banks. He built a brick jail in 1921 for African Americans in the City of West Palm Beach. Killed on July 2, 1946, his murderer was never identified.
