John D. MacArthur, Businessman and Community Developer
John D. MacArthur founded the Bankers Life and Casualty Company. He owned about 100,000 acres of land in Florida, making him the state’s largest landowner. He started the City of Palm Beach Gardens in 1959 and invited the Professional Golfers’ Association to make its home there. He donated the former U.S. Air Force beach on Singer Island to the state to be preserved as a park, now known as John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.
