FLOR500, Garden 7 James Hartley Beal, Pharmacist, Conchologist, Educator (1861–1945) Dr. Beal was a pharmacist, botanist, educator, lawyer, and conchologist, which is someone who studies shells. One of Fort Walton’s most famous residents, he lectured throughout the United States. His shell collection was donated to Rollins College in Winter Park, and was later transferred to the Florida Museum of Natural History. He and his wife gave land and buildings for the growth of Camp Walton. He lobbied to change the name of the town from Camp Walton to Fort Walton, which officially changed in 1932.
