FLOR500 is a participatory art, nature, and history project that marks the importance of the moment when the history of Florida changed forever and gives a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago. Developed by Xavier Cortada, director and artist-in-residence of FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts’ Office of Engaged Creativity, the project commemorates Florida’s quincentenary in 2013.

On November 27th, 2012, during the Viva Florida 500 Southeast Region Partners’ Meeting, Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner and Vizcaya Director Joel Hoffman joined FIU College of Architecture + The Arts Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cortada in planting and dedicating wildflower garden to Juan Ponce de Leon at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida.
On Thursday, March 7th, 2013, Xavier Cortada joined the Delray Beach Public Art Advisory Board, Plumosa School of the Arts and Delray Beach Parks & Recreation in planting and dedicating a FLOR500 wildflower container garden at Delray Beach's City Hall located at 100 NW 1st Avenue Delray Beach, Florida.
Cortada also delivered a presentation about FLOR500, his participatory art, nature, and history project commemorating Florida’s quincentennial in 2013.
On March 27, 2013, Cortada invited participants at the Miami Tree Summit 2013 (held at FIU Modesto Maidique Campus) to transform his original drawing of a Coreopsis flower on into 100 living gardens across Southeast Florida. His drawing had been cut into 100 tiled pieces; each tile had with a packet of Florida wildflower seeds attached to the back. Participants were asked to take the drawing and seeds home and plant a garden dedicated to one of 500 Floridians who helped shape Florida history during the past 500 years (or to a Floridian who is special in their lives). In the process not only did they pay tribute to an important Floridian, but they will also help improve Florida’s biodiversity by growing native plants. You, too, can now participate. Simply plant wildflowers and dedicate them to one of the (Region 8) Floridians listed below.
