About the artist

Fred Koehler is a children's book writer / illustrator in Lakeland, Florida.

Artist’s Statement:

I spent my youth tracking through Florida's natural paradise – climbing pine trees, mucking through the lakes and rivers, and bringing home all manner of potentially dangerous wildlife. Now I'm teaching my children to do the same, and to appreciate the natural paradise we live in. The snowy orchid is a wonderful example of the delicate and breathtaking landscape that is available to all of us, if only we go looking for it.

FLOR500 is a participatory art, nature, and history project that marks the importance of the moment when the history of Florida changed forever and gives a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago. Developed by Xavier Cortada, director and artist-in-residence of FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts’ Office of Engaged Creativity, the project commemorates Florida’s quincentenary in 2013.
