Pledge your eco-action

One of the main reasons why the Imperial Eagle has become an endangered animal is because they have lost much of their habitat in the native forests of Europe due to the forest industry; therefore, I pledge to consciously recycle what I can and make my home more energy-efficient.

I am choosing to adopt this animal because it is a beautiful creature and like every other endangered animal it does not deserve to be killed. Another reason why I chose to adopt it was because its reason for becoming extinct has a bigger impact than what meets the eye. This animal is killed every time forests are burned or demolished and by promoting safety for this animal I will also be promoting the conservation of forests.

Pledge your eco-action

I pledge to write on both sides of the pages on my notebook in order to conserve paper. Which animal are you adopting?

African Lion, Panthera Leo

14 E

Why adopt this animal?

I fell in love with Southern Africa when I traveled to Namibia in 2006. It was where my commitment to environmental conservation and education was sparked. Part of what fostered this passion within me was all the breath-taking experiences observing the wildlife species and magnificent landscapes. Our last day in Namibia was when we encountered an African Lion, hoping to at least see one the entire trip, a large male surrounded in a well-worn mane crested over a hill in front of us and paused, as if he were there just for us to see and admire. Turns out, he was actually looking for one of his females. We were blessed with their presence for nearly an hour and got to observe their graceful movements. It was the lion’s roaring that also put us to sleep each night, feeling the vibration of it on the ground in our tents from miles away. These lions and others like them are humbling, reminding us of our small place in this world we inherited from them. We need this reminder now more than ever, and it would be a tragedy to see the African Lion leave this world, their world, forever.

Pledge your eco-action

Though the exact cause of African Lion population decline is not well understood, it appears to be a combination of loss of land/home ranges due to development, and decrease in prey and habitat conditions, as well as conflict with humans. At the moment, I cannot work to preserve land in Africa or educate local Africans on lion conversation but I can work to reduce habitat loss and degradation in my area. I will participate in a local event restoring and/or creating habitat for wildlife (e.g. gardening, tree planting, wetland clean-up).
