Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie Patterson, Civil Rights Activists (Wilhelmina Jakes: 1929–2010; Carrie Patterson: 1935–1969) Wilhelmina Jakes was born in South Carolina, but her family moved to West Palm Beach when she was a child. Carrie Patterson was born in Georgia, but grew up in Lakeland. In 1956, the two friends, both students at Florida A&M University, were arrested in Tallahassee because they refused to give up their seats next to a white passenger at the front of a city bus. This act sparked the Tallahassee Bus Boycott that ended segregation on city buses.
