FLOR500, Garden 16 John William Brooks, Civic Leader, Businessman (1880–1943) John William Brooks was the oldest son of John Thomas and Harriett Brooks. He was a deputy sheriff, a postmaster in Wright, Florida from 1911 to 1916, and organizer of the Masonic Lodge. He helped to establish the Protestant Church, and owned and operated a cargo-passenger boat. Brooks was the first licensed real estate agent in the community and the area’s first owner of a Model T Ford. He also served as community dentist for many years.
