FLOR500, Garden 167 May Mann Jennings, Environmental Activist (1872–1963) Jennings became First Lady when her husband William Sherman Jennings was elected governor. After his term ended, she became active in a variety of reform efforts, such as woman suffrage, child welfare, and protection of the environment. She fought to preserve part of the Everglades as a national park, and became a recognized leader in conservation.
