FLOR500, Garden 174 Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, Chaplain (1500s) Born in Jerez de Frontera, Spain, Father Lopez was the chaplain for Pedro Menéndez’s fleet during the 1565 expedition that established St. Augustine. He performed the first Mass at St. Augustine and began missionary work at the newly-established Mission Nombre de Dios. He was the first parish priest in what is now the United States. An eleven foot tall bronze statue of Father Lopez stands at the historic mission in St. Augustine.
