FLOR500, Garden 182 Friar Francisco Pareja, Missionary and Writer (? –1628) Pareja was a Franciscan missionary among the Timucua Indians of northeast Florida. He arrived in Florida in 1595 and was posted at the San Juan del Puerto mission. He documented the Timucua language and composed a Timucua-Spanish dictionary to assist other missionaries in communicating with the Indians. Pareja’s Confessionario, written in 1613, reveals many aspects of the Timucuan culture.
