FLOR500, Garden 212 Herbert Jackson Drane, Politician (1863–1947) Considered one of the founders of Lakeland, Herbert Drane arrived in Polk County in 1883. A citrus grower, businessman, and newspaper editor, he served as Lakeland’s mayor in 1888, and Polk County commissioner in 1896. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1903, and served in the State senate from 1913 to 1917 before being elected to the U.S. Congress where he served seven terms until 1933.
