FLOR500, Garden 224 Ben Hill Griffin, Jr., Businessman, Politician (1910–1990) Griffin started out as a citrus grower, but bought his first ranch in the late 1930s, a 16,000 acre spread named the Peace River Ranch. He later acquired 50,000 acres in Highlands County, and had holdings in other counties, as well. His citrus operation also grew, and his company became one of the largest agricultural businesses in Florida. Griffin served both as a state representative representing Polk County and a state senator. He was a major benefactor of his alma mater, the University of Florida, which named its football stadium in his honor.
