FLOR500, Garden 226 Tony Jannus, Pilot (1889–1916) Tony Jannus, born in Washington, D.C., was a well-known early pilot. In 1912, he flew the airplane from which the first parachute jump was made. He flew for the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, the world's first scheduled airline using winged aircraft, making him the first airline pilot. The airline began regular service between St. Petersburg and Tampa on January 1, 1914, and operated until May 5, 1914. In 1916, Jannus was killed over the Black Sea when his plane experienced engine trouble.
