FLOR500, Garden 287 Virgil Hawkins, Attorney, Civil Rights Activist (1907–1988) Hawkins, born in Okahumpka, near Leesburg, applied for admission to law school at the University of Florida, but was denied because he was an African American. He sued the State of Florida, which eventually agreed to desegregate the school if Hawkins withdrew his request for admission. He did so, making it possible for others to enter regardless of race. He graduated from an out-of-state unaccredited law school, and his request to take the Florida Bar exam was denied. After more litigation, at age 70, the Florida Supreme Court admitted him to the Florida Bar.
