William Jenkins Worth, Military Leader (1794–1849) Worth was a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Second Seminole War. He pushed the Seminoles south and relocated others west to Indian Territory. On August 14, 1842, he declared the Second Seminole War over. When Army troops discovered the large freshwater lake to the west of what is now Palm Beach, they named it in his honor.
